About

Private Lessons for Guitar, Mandolin, Ukulele, Tenor Banjo, and beginning Fiddle with Bob Westfall on Madison's East Side.
I have 35 years of teaching experience, and I am experienced at teaching all age and skill levels, and am adept at a variety of styles including: folk, jazz, classical, swing, blues, country, bluegrass, Irish, and more.

My teaching philosophy: Music is my profession and it is also my passion. I believe that everyone possesses musical ability, and it is my goal to empower my students with the tools that will enable them to pursue learning long after the lessons are over.
I am able to help people get better at playing more effectively and to shorten the learning curve.

I am a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. I have performed, recorded, and or shared the stage with some of the world's finest acoustic musicians, Doc Watson, Leo Kottke, Riders in the Sky, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, David Bromberg, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Alex De Grassi, Willy Porter, and John Hartford to name a few. I have recorded 4 CD's of my own on which I played mandolins, violins, piano, and a host of guitars. I have been teaching for 30 years, doing workshops, clinics, and songwriting classes, music camps, and have written 3 books for Hal Leonard Publishing. Aside from doing session work I currently perform with my group Big Bang String Thing.

"As long as the evolution of acoustic folk music is in the hands of people like Bob Westfall, it should enjoy a smooth and steady rise in popularity."
James M. Tarbox Knight- Ridder Newspapers/ St. Paul Pioneer Press

Student Testimonials:
"Bob is able to keep both musical challenge and inspiration very much alive in an easy going, friendly atmosphere." Jake Skibba - mandolin, banjo
"Bob approaches teaching from every aspect. I learned the basics of music theory, including note reading and rhythm, and have been exposed to a wide variety of artists. Bob's enthusiasm, active instruction, and encouragement have been instrumental to my growth as a musician. But more importantly, Bob has helped me express my passion for music." Roy Eenigenburg, guitar

I also help other musicians produce recordings and have helped students prepare for Berklee School of Music, Guitar Institute of Technology, and UW Madison.
