PRIVATE GUITAR LESSONS BY MARK W. BATCHELDER Learning to play the guitar should be fun! It's more fun to learn by playing songs. I teach adults, teens, and kids. I encourage non-playing parents to actively participate with their kid's lessons. My teaching style is to use patience and positive reinforcement - similar to Suzuki method violin instructors. I start with songs and teach a little theory all along the way. I teach things I wish someone had taught me when I was learning: chords (simple, power, barre), patterns (solo, rhythm, shuffles), songs (accompanyment while singing, performing, improvising), useful theory (chords, numbers, transposing), and music reading. Lessons are usually once per week. In addition to being a professional guitar instructor, I am also an attorney, a qualified mediator, a graduate-level mediation trainer, a member of the band-Panther City Rounders, a YMCA volunteer, a licensed pilot, and a devoted husband and proud father. FIRST LESSON: In the first lesson with a beginner, I introduce proper posture and technique (how to hold the guitar, hands, and pick) and some simple chords and rhythm so that we can play a song! In the first lesson with a more experienced student we begin with what the student is comfortable playing and discuss the student's goals so that we can focus on skills and songs the student would like to learn. I always center my lessons around playing songs. STUDENT: The ideal guitar student is someone who WANTS to play guitar! A person who is self-motivated can overcome the usual difficulties of learning a new skill. Taking guitar lessons makes the learning process easier and more fun because progress is faster. If there are songs you want to play, let's work on making the music happen! APPOINTMENT: I am able to schedule lessons during the day or evening. Please call me for an appointment! After the first lesson: $30 - 30-minute lesson (for kids who are accompanied by a non-playing adult), or $50 - 1-hour lesson (for one student - adult, teen, or kid), or $60 - 1-hour lesson (shared by two or three students) (10% discount for pre-paid package of 4 pre-scheduled lessons.) All fees must be paid in advance. Additional charges may apply if I agree to travel to your location. There is no charge for non-playing adults who attend a lesson with a student. I accept cash, checks, or money orders.
