Brooklyn Pedal Steel Lessons

Taught by: Michael P. Wolfsohn
From complete beginners to advanced players, I teach E9th (Nashville) Pedal Steel Guitar at all levels. You'll learn correct right-hand position and technique, especially blocking, which is absolutely essential to playing this instrument well. You'll learn bar control, proper technique for using pedals and knee levers, and correct use of the volume pedal. By learning to analyze songs as played by Pedal Steel greats such as Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Greene, Red Rhodes, Jay Dee Maness and many others, you'll learn how to play any song in any of these styles, and how to develop your own style!!
In addition to instrumental study, I teach all of my students Music Theory, so that they have the tools they will need to learn songs from recordings, play with others (or in a band), to improvise & play solos - to write their own songs, if that is their wish!!
Once you decide that you want to learn how to play, you will need to have an instrument, as regular practice is an essential part of learning to play well. Choosing the right instrument for your particular situation is also extremely important, as the quality of your instrument can have a profound effect on your learning. (Sadly, I have more than once seen someone give up on learning to play Pedal Steel, thinking that they lacked talent or ability, when, in fact, their only real lack was the lack of a playable instrument!!! Much more so than with guitars, really inexpensive steels can be so poorly made as to be unplayable!) This is such an important concept, that even if you never inquire about lessons, I will be happy to answer your questions about instruments, and to help you find an appropriate instrument for your playing level. My mission is to help people learn as quickly as possible how to play music well!!
