How to cover a tattoo

If you need to cover your tattoo the way that no one is even able to guess that it’s actually there, the best thing you can do is to purchase special tattoo cover up product.

It looks kind of like a very thick concealer with a sponge applicator. When it comes to concealing tattoos and ensuring the most prolonged effect, those products are the best.

But, if you don’t have one of them on you and you still need to cover up your tattoo to go to a special event, pose for a photo shoot or just visit your parents who’re not particularly ready to see your newest body transformation, you definitely have a second option.

Those makeup tattoo cover up creams or airbrush makeup systems are probably the most effective and the most reliable means of making your pretty butterfly or inspiring quote invisible.

However, you can reach quite impressive results with your ordinary makeup. You’ll have to spend a little bit of time and pull a couple of products out of your makeup drawer.

But what matters the most in this situation is that you’ll be able to cover up your tattoo. And, you won’t have to purchase additional makeup items at all.

Do you still want to know how to do that? If yes, let’s get started!

Steps to cover a tattoo with makeup

  1. Gather your supplies. Concealer is the most important thing you’ll need.
Thick cream one that comes in a pallet or in a stick will cover up a tattoo the best. But you can work with your ordinary liquid one.
Most importantly, it shouldn’t be one of those highlighting under eye concealers. No shimmer is needed to do this job.
  2. You’ll need your normal foundation (preferably long-lasting one), translucent setting powder, glitter and shine free hairspray and a makeup sponge or stippling brush to apply your products.
  3. Make sure that your coverup products match your skin tone as much as possible. This will help you achieve the most natural and flawless result.
  4. Bear in mind that you can’t conduct this procedure unless your tattoo has healed up completely.
You don’t want to risk your health just for the look, do you? Otherwise, you may get quite serious skin infection.
  5. So, the first actual step you have to take is to prep your skin under and around the tattoo. Wash and exfoliate the area to avoid dry patches.
Cleanse with toner or micellar water. Dry your skin with a towel.
  6. The next step is quite optional. You may apply a little bit of primer onto the area or skip this step.
If you decide to use it, make sure that your product is not oil-based.
  7. Start applying your concealer. Cover the actual tattoo and apply a little bit to your skin around it.
Don’t use too much product not to end up with ridiculously thick layer of makeup.
  8. Start blending your concealer with a sponge. A duo fiber (stippling) brush will do as well.
Blot the product into your skin
instead of smearing it all over the place.
It will help the product hold onto your skin and conceal the image much better. Besides, this method reduces the amount of concealer you’ll have to use.
  9. If your tattoo has colorful elements, apply concealer of the contrasting color to cover them better.
For instance, red elements will be covered by green concealer, blue ones – by orange, etc.
Orange concealer will help you cover denser tatoos as well
    .
Once you’ve used it, apply a layer of skin-tone concealer like in steps 7-8.
  10. Let your concealer set. After that, cover the spot with a thin layer of your foundation.
Again, use blotting/dabbing motions not to smudge the concealer.
Make sure to blend your foundation onto ‘clear skin’ beyond the tattoo to make sure that the makeup ‘border’ stays invisible.
  11. Set your coverup with clear powder. Dab in onto the area, don’t wipe everything off with the sponge.
  12. Finally, spray the area with a little bit of hairspray.
It will make your coverup long-lasting and smudge-proof.
  13. Let the finish dry up completely before putting your clothes over the tattoo area and you’re done!
You may watch quite a lot of similar tutorials on YouTube.

As you can see, the process isn’t too difficult, but it can take quite a while to finish. And, it doesn’t provide you with a permanent solution.

Besides, I would not encourage you to hide something from other people, especially form your family and beloved ones. Be jour true self, right?

But when you want to do that to reach a certain look just because you like it that way, why not?

Moreover, you have to remember that tattoos aren’t as permanent as they used to be now. If you don’t like your tattoo anymore or if it doesn’t suit the person you’ve grown into, you may totally get it removed or changed.

A professional tattoo artist will find the way to transform your tattoo into a new one you like much better. Or, if you wish, he’ll remove it for good. Then, you won’t have to worry about covering something up anymore.
